Pavilions built for a world exhibition are kept in use on an island of park and water
What it argues with
Pavilions made for a six-month exhibition were shaped to be looked at from every side, with angled walls and stacked levels rather than plain floors. They now hold a long-term use on an island whose other ground is grass, trees and water. Nothing else on the island is built to be seen that way.
What it agrees with
The buildings stay on their original exhibition footprint, and the island keeps the roads and bridges laid out for it. Water is on more than one side, the level rooms look out over it, and the mass stops well before the shore, leaving the open ground the island is used for.
How it settles
Distance settles most of it. The complex is reached by bridge, and park and water surround the built ground on every side, so no street or neighbouring frontage has to meet the pavilions directly.

Fallsview Casino Resort

A large resort is set along the rim of a river gorge that everything else here is arranged around
What it argues with
The gorge edge is the one piece of ground in the district that was never made by building. A resort of this size, with theatre, spa and restaurants under one roof, is a single continuous mass. It meets an edge that is broken stone and falling water, and the two have no shared geometry at all.
What it agrees with
Its rooms and dining floors are turned towards the water, which is the orientation every building on this street takes. It follows the slope of the escarpment rather than levelling it, and it keeps to the built side of the road, leaving the rim itself to parkland.
How it settles
The public parkland along the rim is kept between the building and the gorge, so the mass never reaches the edge. Levels step with the hill, and the arrival side is put uphill, away from the water.
Make this easy
Work out in advance how you will move between the upper street and the parkland below, as the slope is steep.

River Rock Casino Resort
Richmond, British Columbia, Canada
A resort with its own moorings sits on a working arm of the Fraser River among low flat land
What it argues with
Flat low land around the site is mostly given to sheds, roads and river works. The resort brings height, a concert hall and a long horizontal frontage into that. Where the neighbouring structures are single-purpose and separate, this one gathers many uses under one roof and reads as a single object from far off.
What it agrees with
It keeps the river edge in working use, with a marina rather than a decorative frontage, which matches what the arm is for. Its long side runs parallel to the water like the buildings along the channel, and it stays on made ground beside the existing road.
How it settles
The moorings and the quay strip act as the transition, so the building steps down to water through a working edge. Parking and service are placed on the land side, leaving the river face to walkable ground.

Check how you will travel from the airport or the city, and allow time for the bridges at busy hours.

Casino Rama Resort
Rama, Ontario, Canada
One large roof gathers many uses in a country of lakes, forest and widely spaced low buildings
What it argues with
Building here is normally small and scattered: cottages, halls and service buildings placed apart among trees. This is a single wide structure holding a concert hall, dining and rooms together. It makes one clearing where the pattern around it makes many, and its roof spans distances the local buildings never span.
What it agrees with
It stays low against the treeline rather than rising through it, and the forest is kept close to its edges instead of being pushed back. It stands on land held by the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, is reached by the same country roads, and keeps its parking flat and on grade.
How it settles
The trees left around the site close the view quickly, so the building is only seen from its own approach. Entrances face the car ground, and the taller room block is set behind the lower halls.

Plan the drive and your return in advance, as the roads through the lake country are quiet after dark.
